Puthen Pally Solar Project
Project Overview
In response to escalating electricity bills, which once reached approximately ₹100,000 per month, the church authorities decided to invest in renewable energy solutions. On December 28, 2018, they inaugurated a 35 kW on-grid solar power system atop their office building. This system, installed at a cost of ₹22 lakh, was designed to meet the church's energy needs while contributing surplus power back to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) grid, thanks to its net-metering capability .YouTube
Technical Specifications
Capacity: 35 kilowatts
System Type: On-grid (net-metered)
Installation Site: Church office building
Annual Energy Contribution: Over 50,000 units supplied to the KSEB grid
Maintenance: Panels are cleaned quarterly to ensure optimal performanceMathrubhumi+6Renewables Now+6SunSenz+6
The on-grid system operates without battery storage, converting direct current (DC) generated by the solar panels into alternating current (AC) for immediate use. Excess energy produced during daylight hours is fed into the KSEB grid, and during periods of insufficient sunlight, electricity is drawn from the grid, ensuring a seamless power supply .Wikipedia
Broader Impact and Future Plans
The success of the Puthenpally solar project has inspired other institutions in Thrissur to consider similar sustainable energy solutions. The Thrissur Municipal Corporation has initiated efforts to transition several of its buildings to solar power, including the Jayhind Market, Paravattani Store, and the Corporation's sub-treasury office. This movement towards renewable energy reflects a growing awareness and commitment to environmental responsibility within the community .
